National Natural Monument
You will find a various kinds of vegetation, with warm zone plants, northern temperate plants such as conifers, and primitive plants in Mt. Misen. The area designated for World Heritage comprises 431.2 hectares including the buildings of Itsukushima Shrine, the sea to the front, and the Mt. Misen primitive forest to the rear.
There are approximately 700 maple trees in Momijidani Park.
The species includes about 560 Acer palmatum maples of which there are the most, about 100 Acer amoenum maples, and about 40 others which include Acer rufinerve maples, Yamamomiji (mountain maples), and more.
Created in 1983, taking 2 years and 10 months, it is a symbol of Miyajima, the birthplace of the Shamoji rice paddle.
